How to use the letter

Read it once before you send it. Make sure the names, numbers, and amounts are right. Sign it (digitally or by hand). Keep a copy for yourself. Send it the way the company asks — usually email or their hardship portal. If the situation is urgent, follow up with a phone call the next business day and reference the letter you sent.

A few things that make hardship letters work

• Be specific. Vague letters get filed; specific letters get answered.
• Be calm. The person reading this letter has read a thousand desperate ones. A composed letter stands out.
• Ask for something concrete. A payment plan, a deferred payment, a hardship program, a discount. Name the thing.
• Stay honest. Don't exaggerate. Don't apologize too much. Just tell the truth.
• Follow up. No reply in five business days? Call. Reference the letter. Be polite. Be persistent.
